How do I install Medmont Studio for the first time?
How do I update Medmont Studio to a newer version?

How do I install Medmont Studio on a PC for the first time?

Usually, we will send out a technician to install your software for you when you purchase a Medmont instrument. If you ever have to install Medmont Studio by yourself, you can follow the steps below:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not plug in your Medmont Instrument/s or USB License Dongle, or install any Medmont hardware on your PC (such as the Leutron Capture Card for use with E300, or the USB cable connected to an M700 Automated Perimeter) until after installing the Medmont Studio software.

  • Insert the Medmont Studio installation disc into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and wait for the menu to appear. From this menu, choose "Install Medmont Studio". Click 'Next' when the Welcome screen appears, then choose 'Everyone' and click 'Next' twice again to begin the installation.
  • Soon the Configuration Tool will appear. Select Standalone as your configuration on the first screen (unless setting up a client/server setup; if so, select appropriate option for that PC, making sure to install Medmont Studio on the Server before installing on any clients). Click Next.
  • Click Next twice. If you wish to integrate with a Practice Management System, choose it on this screen and click Next, specifying the data path for your system if prompted. If not, click Next with nothing selected.
  • Click Next, then select the appropriate instrument/s for your practice. Click Next.
  • On this screen
    - For M700 Automated Perimeter, select USB interface and Fixation Detection Camera.
    - For E300 Corneal Topographer, choose Leutron Card.
    - For DV2000 Diagnostic Video Imaging, choose whichever drivers are appropriate for your own setup (these will vary depending on your setup - you may require IT assistance if you are unsure of your hardware.
  • Insert the Medmont USB License Dongle into a free USB port on PC2. You will be presented with a Windows dialog that asks if you want Windows to connect to Windows Update to search for a driver. Choose No, then click Next. You will be asked if you want Windows to install the device automatically. Choose the default option (“Install the software automatically”), then click Next. This will install the appropriate driver for you automatically.·
  • Plug in your Medmont instrument/s and install their drivers in the following manner:
    - For M700 Automated Perimeter: Turn on the M700 Automated Perimeter and connect the USB cable running from the perimeter into the PC. You may be prompted with a Windows dialog that asks if you want Windows to connect to Windows Update to search for a driver. Choose No, then click Next. You will then be asked if you want Windows to install the device automatically. Choose the default option (“Install the software automatically”), then click Next. This will install the appropriate driver for you automatically. Follow these same steps for any subsequent ‘Add New Hardware’ screens that follow.
    - For E300 Corneal Topographer: Turn off the PC and install the Leutron capture card into a free PCI slot on PC2 (this requires that you open your PC - you may require IT assistance if unsure how to install a PCI device). Plug the cable running from the E300 Corneal Topographer into the matching port on the Leutron card. Turn your PC back on. Follow the ‘Add New Hardware’ wizard in the same manner as for M700 above.
    - For DV2000 Diagnostic Video Imaging: Install any relevant software and drivers for cameras that you use with Medmont DV2000 software.
  • Open Medmont Studio 4 from the desktop icon or the Start menu. It will not yet recognise your license (you have not yet entered your activation key), so the software will be in Single User Review mode, a mode in which new exams cannot be launched. Click into the Tools>License Manager menu. A Dongle ID should already be visible (if it is not, Windows has not correctly installed your license dongle and you will need to seek IT help
  • Click the Edit button next to the Activation Key field and enter your Activation Key as provided by Medmont, then click Ok. You will now see your licensed components listed in the License Manager screen. Close the license manager. Your setup is complete. You can now begin using Medmont Studio.

How do I update Medmont Studio to a newer version?

Updating your Medmont Studio 4 software to a newer version is much simpler than installing it from scratch. This is because of all your instrument drivers and data are on your system already and only the software itself requires updating.

To update your software to the newest version of Medmont Studio 4, follow the steps below:

  • Back up your current database (on your server if using a multi-computer setup) by making a copy of the folder C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4\Data as per your own regular backup procedures.
  • Visit our Downloads page and download the latest version of our software, choosing to Save (rather than Run) when prompted. Choose Desktop as the destination. If you are updating from a version prior to v4.9.0, you will also need to download the Microsoft .NET Framework v2 software. If you have Medmont Studio installed on multiple PCs, download the updater onto your server first. This same file can then be transferred over the network, or via a USB stick or other media to allow other PCs to run the update without downloading it again.
  • When you have downloaded the file/s to your desktop, run the Microsoft .NET installer first if required (only required if upgrading from a version prior to v4.9.0), then run the Medmont Studio updater. Choose the default selections all the way through the installer (this applies to both installations). Medmont Studio will remember the configuration of your previous version and automatically default to those selections, allowing you to simply click 'Next' all the way through the setup unless something specific has changed in your setup (NOTE: you do not need to re-tick the boxes regarding drivers for your instrument/s. These will default to an unticked state as they have already been installed).
  • Click Finish when prompted.
  • If running a multi-computer setup, repeat these steps for all client machines (except for the first step - only the Server needs to be backed up).
  • Your software is now up to date. To verify that the new version has been installed correctly, open Medmont Studio and click the Help menu, then choose About Medmont Studio. The new version number will appear.

(NOTE: We do not offer free step-by-step phone support for the Migration of Medmont data due to the purchase of a new PC, a PC upgrade or any other environmental change such as recovery from a system crash).

PC1 refers to the PC you are migrating the data away from. PC2 refers to the PC you are moving the data to.

Please follow these steps carefully:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not plug your Medmont Instrument/s or USB License Dongle into PC2 or install any Medmont hardware on PC2 (such as the Leutron Capture Card for use with E300, or the USB cable connected to an M700 Automated Perimeter) until after installing your Medmont Studio software.

  • First, back up your current database on PC1 by making a copy of the folder C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4\Data as per your own regular backup procedures.
  • Go into the Tools>License Manager menu in Medmont Studio on PC1 and make a note of the Activation Key on paper or in a text file (later you will need to enter this key into the license manager on PC2)·
Select the appropriate configuration on the first screen, then select the appropriate instrument/s for your practice at each later step (NOTE: if installing a client/server setup, install Medmont Studio on the Server first, then on the client PCs)
    - For M700 Automated Perimeter, select M700 Automated Perimeter on the screen regarding components, and then USB interface and Fixation Detection Camera on the screen regarding drivers.
    - For E300 Corneal Topographer, choose E300 Corneal Topographer on the screen regarding components, and then Leutron Card on the screen regarding drivers.
    - For DV2000 Diagnostic Video Imaging, choose DV2000 Diagnostic Video Imaging on the screen regarding relevant components, and then whichever drivers are appropriate for your own setup on the screen regarding drivers (these will vary and may require IT assistance if you are unsure of your hardware).
  • On PC2, open My Computer and browse to C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4. Rename the folder named ‘Data’ to ‘DataOld’·
  • Go back to PC1 and copy the Medmont Data folder from PC1 to PC2. This can be done by making another copy of the folder C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4\Data in its entirety onto either portable media such as a USB stick or a portable hard drive, or directly over the network to PC2, and then copying it into the same directory C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4 on PC2.
It is essential that you copy the folder to the same directory on PC2 as it was in previously on PC1 (C:\Program Files\Medmont\Medmont Studio\Medmont Studio 4).
When you have completed this successfully, you should be able to see the folders ‘Data’ and ‘DataOld’ together in the Medmont Studio 4 folder.
  • Go into the Windows Start menu on PC2 and choose All Programs>Medmont>Medmont Studio Configuration Tool. Proceed through all of the screens in the configuration tool, leaving all options as default, then clicking Finish at the end of the wizard.
  • Remove the Medmont USB License Dongle from PC1 and insert it into a free USB port on PC2. You will be presented with a Windows dialog that asks if you want Windows to connect to Windows Update to search for a driver. Choose No, then click Next. You will be asked if you want Windows to install the device automatically. Choose the default option (“Install the software automatically”), then click Next. This will install the appropriate driver for you automatically.
  • Plug in your Medmont instrument/s and install their drivers in the following manner:
    - For M700 Automated Perimeter: Turn on the M700 Automated Perimeter and connect the USB cable from the Perimeter into the PC. You will be presented with a Windows dialog that asks if you want Windows to connect to Windows Update to search for a driver. Choose No, then click Next. You will be asked if you want Windows to install the device automatically. If so, choose the default option (“Install the software automatically”), then click Next. This will install the appropriate driver for you automatically. Follow these steps for any subsequent ‘Add New Hardware’ screens that follow.
    - For E300 Corneal Topographer: Turn off PC1 and PC2 and remove the Leutron Vision capture card from PC1. After removing it from PC1, install it into a free PCI slot on PC2. Turn PC2 back on. Follow the ‘Add New Hardware’ wizard in the same manner as for M700.
    - For DV2000 Diagnostic Video Imaging: Install any relevant software and drivers for cameras that you use with Medmont DV2000 software.
  • Open Medmont Studio 4 from the desktop icon or the Start menu. It will not yet recognise your license (you have not yet entered your activation key), so the software will be in Single User Review mode, in which new exams cannot be launched, but existing data can be viewed. When you can see your patients in the tree view, click into the Tools>License Manager menu. A Dongle ID should already be visible (if it is not, Windows has not correctly installed your license dongle and you will need to seek help from an IT professional).
Click the Edit button and enter your Activation Key taken from PC1 into the text box, then click Ok. You will now see your licensed components in the License Manager screen. Close the license manager. Your setup is complete. You can now begin using Medmont Studio.

I am receiving the error "Dongle Not Detected" when I open Medmont Studio 4 and I am now unable to create new exams.

This error indicates that your Medmont license dongle is not being detected by your PC. In this case, the software automatically switches into a mode called Single User Review, in which exams can be viewed and printed but new exams cannot be created. To resolve your issue, your valid license information needs to be present and viewable in the License Manager screen, which is accessible from the Tools menu in Medmont Studio.

Follow the steps below to resolve your issue:

  • Ensure that your Medmont license dongle is plugged into a USB port on your PC. If it is not, simply reinserting the dongle will resolve the issue (close and re-open Medmont Studio after inserting the Dongle).
  • If it is plugged in, unplug it and insert it into a different available port on your PC.
  • Windows should now recognise the dongle and display a 'Found New Hardware' dialog. In this wizard, choose No if prompted to connect to the internet, then on the next screen, choose Install Automatically and click Next. This should install a device called Feitian ROCKEY 4 USB, which is the driver name for your license dongle.
  • Restart Medmont Studio. Full functionality should be restored. You can click into the Tools menu and choose License Manager to verify that your components have been licensed.
  • If Windows does not detect the Dongle (i.e no window appears when you plug it in), try plugging it into a different PC to see if the Dongle itself is faulty. If it is not detected on another PC, it may be faulty. Please contact us for assistance.
  • If Windows detects the dongle on another PC, but not on the PC on which Medmont Studio is installed, there is a problem with the Windows installation on that PC which should be dealt with by an IT professional.

I am receiving the error "Could not connect to server on 192.168.XX.XX" when I try to open Medmont Studio.

This error indicates that you are running Medmont Studio in a networked environment and your PC cannot establish a connection with the Server.

The first thing to check when you receive this error is whether you have an active network connection. Any easy way to test this is to try to open a web page in Internet Explorer. If it fails to open, you have a basic connectivity problem and should consult your IT professional immediately for assistance.

The next thing to consider is whether your AntiVirus or firewall software may have recently updated itself or changed its settings, inedvertantly blocking Medmont Studio. To see if this is the case, try completely disabling your antivirus and firewall on both the server and client PC/s on your network.

Be aware that you are disabling your PC's protection against malicious attacks and viruses when you turn off these systems. Ask your IT person to disable your internet connection during this testing if this greatly concerns you. Also, ensure that you immediately turn these systems back on after testing.

If access to Medmont Studio is restored with these systems disabled, something has happened in your Antivirus or Firewall software which has blocked Medmont Studio, and you will need to get your IT person to configure the software to restore access to Medmont Studio.

If you are receiving the same error, please contact us.

I am receiving the error "Invalid Database Version. Expected xx, got xx" when I try to open Medmont Studio.

This error indicates that there is a mis-match between the version number of your database and the version number of your Medmont Studio software. It is possible that someone has restored a database backup or moved it from another PC.

Follow the steps below to resolve the error:

  • Go into your Start menu and choose Programs > Medmont > Medmont Studio Configuration Tool.
  • Run through the configuration tool leaving the default selections unchanged and clicking Next all the way through, then click Finish.
  • Try opening Medmont Studio. Depending on the nature of the mis-match, this may or may not have resolved the issue.
  • If the problem persists, it's most likely that your software is version is older than your database version. To fix this problem, download the latest version of Medmont Studio here and follow the upgrade instructions found here. This will upgrade your software to be up to date with the database you are trying to open.

When selecting an item on the Medmont Studio toolbar, either nothing happens or I receive the following message: “Medmont Studio toolbar error; Unknown item Analyses in toolbar. Medmont recommends resetting the toolbar”. Resetting the toolbar had no effect on this issue.

This issue indicates that some of the Medmont Studio configuration files specific to the toolbar have become corrupt. These files must be deleted before Medmont Studio is used again.

  • Close down Medmont Studio
  • Open Windows explorer, then select Tools > Folder Options. Select the view tab, and then select the “show hidden files and folders” radio button. Click OK to apply both changes
  • Browse to: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Medmont\Medmont.Studio.Console ; where Username = Windows username
  • Delete all files that either end with a .dnb extension or have the file type listed as dnb file
  • In the same window, browser to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Medmont\Medmont.Studio.Console
  • Delete all files that either end with a .dnb extension or have the file type listed as dnb file

Patient Management

I use a Practice Management System and I now have duplicate patients in Medmont Studio. I would like to merge them so I only have one entry for each patient. How do I do this?

In this case, we will separate the duplicate patients by the names patient A and patient B:

Patient A - Has saved exams, you want to keep this patient
Patient B - Is the same real-world patient, may have some exams also. You want to merge this patient record with patient A.

To merge these patients, simply select patient B in the patient tree and choose ‘Link Unlinked Patients’ – this will give a prompt to merge. Follow the prompt, selecting patient A as the patient you want to merge with.
